Putting Things on Pause

This announcement will likely not come as a shock, but to get to the point immediately, I have temporarily suspended development of Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars.

The first point I want to make is that the game is not cancelled, and it is still my intention to see it through to completion; not just in the nebulous "someday" future, but within the next two years. However, a few things have become obvious.

  1. This is a truly enormous project, even given my efforts to keep the scope manageable.
  2. This is a project I believe in, and want it to be the best it can possibly be.
  3. There is too much I don't know about actually seeing a game through to completion.

Because of this, for the past few months, I have been quietly doing preliminary development on two projects, one a very short-term project, and one larger-size project, both of which I intend to use to acquire the skills I need to complete Silent Weapons, as well as to test out some design ideas for it in a smaller-scoped context.

The first game, which I hope to formally announce before the month is out, is a very small project mostly intended to develop my "actually completing a project" skills. However, even within this utilitarian goal, I have already learned at least one lesson which will be important for making Silent Weapons. This small game will be, in a one-sentence pitch, Dorfromantik but with Carcassone swapped out for the original SimCity.

The second, larger game, is intended to be an action game which will be a testing ground for the enemy AI I want to implement in Silent Weapons. It will be a Metal Gear Solid inspired stealth shmup, but I will not be announcing it formally before I have released the full version of the first game. It will also be set in the same fictional universe as Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars, but I'm not going to try to position it as a spin off or anything, just that the main characters will also appear as recruitable agents in SWfQW.

I am sure that, regardless of my assurances, this will still be a disappointing announcement. But I assure you, that with these side-project games in development, the project is more alive than ever.
